Birding in Buenos Aires

The capital of Argentina is also a good starting point for a birding trip to the southern Hemisphere, and the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, located at 15’ minute-drive from downtown, offers the best possibilities due to the diversity and quantity of individuals found in various habitats.
In its 350 hectares, the wetlands, woods, Pampas’ grasslands and lakes, provide habitat for resident and migratory birds, recording more than 225 species. The wetlands are home of Black-necked and Coscoroba swans, White-tufted grebe, Silver teal, Rosy-billed pochards, Plumbeous rail, Red-gartered coots, Striated herons, and Southern screamers, among many others, while in the bushes and Pampa’s grasslands you can spot Spectacled tyrants, Great Pampa-finches, Black-and-rufous warbling-finches, Grassland yellow finches and Hooded siskins. The Monk and Nanday parakeets, together with the Guira cuckoo and the Red-crested cardinal are conspicuous presences in the forests of the reserve.
An efficient system of trails and roads allow good observations of the different species, including the Rufous hornero, Argentina’s national bird.
But Buenos Aires also offers many other fantastic nearby birding locations such as the Paraná River Delta, Ribera Norte Natural Park, the Otamendi Natl Preserve, the Palermo’s parks, and it is the gate to explore the Pampas’ grasslands and wetlands.
Itinerario sugerido
- Día 1: Arribo a El Calafate. Observación de aves en lagunas y estepa patagónica.
- Día 2: Excursión de día entero a los bosques del Parque Nacional Los Glaciares en torno al Glaciar Moreno.
- Día 3: Traslado a El Chaltén para observar aves de bosque y humedales
- Día 4: En vehículos especiales nos dirigiremos a la Meseta del Strobel, alojándonos en una estancia ganadera.
- Día 5: Búsqueda del Macá tobiano en las lagunas de la meseta del Strobel.
- Día 6: Avistajes en los grandes juncales en busca de la gallineta austral y otras especies de aves.
- Día 7: Por la tarde Regreso a El Calafate
- Día 8. Partida: Traslado al aeropuerto para tomar vuelo de partida
