Birding in the Pampas
- Duración: 2 or 3 days
- Season: de Octubre a Abril
The Pampas’ grasslands, wetlands and seashores around General Lavalle and San Clemente del Tuyú (about 3 ½ hour-drive from BA), are one of our favorite places for birding as they concentrate interesting numbers of special species and habitats.
Punta Rasa and its mudflats (home of millions of crabs), in the transition between the salty and freshwater tides, concentrate migratory species from North America, such as the White-rumped and the Baird’s sandpipers, the Sanderling, the Lesser yellowleg, the Hudsonian godwit and the Black tern, among many, but also receive the visit of local breeders such as the Olrog’s gull and South American tern.
The native grasslands are still the habitat of the Greater rhea, the Spotted and the Red winged tinamous, the Cinereous harrier, and interesting passerines as Hudson’s canastero, Bay-capped wren-spinetail and the Grassland yellow-finches, among dozens more!
A visit to an interesting system of nearby wetlands protected in a private reserve will add species such as the White-faced ibis, the Black-necked swan, the Rosy-billed pochard, the Black-headed duck, the Red shoveler, the Many-colored rush-tyrant, the Spotted and the Plumbeous rails, the Maguari stork and the hidden South American painted snipe, among dozens of additional species.
