Tour description

A special birding expedition from Buenos Aires to Iguazu

Entre Ríos, Iberá Marshlands and Iguazu National Park.

Expect a unique birding adventure in three top regions: The fields and savannahs of Entre Ríos, the Iberá Marshlands and the Atlantic rain forest of Iguazu National Park.

Northeastern Argentina gives birders the chance to visit a variety of environments, from the open Pampas and wetlands to the lush Atlantic Rainforest in the north.

Discover with us three of the most promising ornithological regions of the subtropical northern Argentina: the south of Entre Ríos (with its grasslands, savannahs and wetlands), the Iberá Marshlands and the lush rainforest of Iguassu National Park, near the border with Brazil, habitats of a large array of wildlife. These areas contain the highest concentration of bird species of the country!

Our journey starts at the Pampas and wetlands near Buenos Aires where we can observe silver teals, straight-billed reedhaunters,rosy-billed pochards, snail kites and great Pampa finches. Later, the Iberá Basin, with 1.300.000 hectares of marshlands, lakes, palm groves and forests, and one of the World’s biggest wetlands, is home to a wide diversity of birds, such as savannah hawks, greater rheas, rufescent tiger-herons, black-capped mockingthrush, the jabiru stork, the scarlet-headed blackbird, wattled jacanas, the endangered strange-tailed tyrant, the yellow cardinal and several species of seedeaters. During our Iberá trip we will stay in a special lodge located in the heart of a cattle ranch in the transitional area between the marshes, woods and the savannah.

Our last destination will be the Atlantic Rainforest in the province of Misiones (extension of the Brazilian rainforest), where we will explore the three protected areas, including the Iguazu National Park, with its magnificent falls and very well preserved forest. This habitat will give us the chance to add many tropical species to our list, such as black-fronted piping-guan, plumbeous kites, black-throated and surucua trogons, long-tufted screech-owls, blue-winged parrotlets, rufous-capped motmots, robust woodpeckers, saffron toucanets, red-breasted toucans, white-necked puffbirds, spotted bamboowrens, several species of tanagers, and more than 12 species of hummingbirds. A good network of trails and park boardwalks into the forest will give us the chance to observe the fascinating birds during and nocturnal outings!
