Tour description
The Uruguayan Carnival celebrations are one of the World's longest, extending throughout February and part of March. For 40 days, street parades and scenarios unfold colorful spectacles and joy.
It begins the last Saturday of January with an inaugural parade down 18 de Julio Avenue, main artery of the city of Montevideo, where all the groups with drums and giant puppets accompany the artists under the rhythm of the Candombe. African heritage is emphasized and freedom from oppressive slavery is celebrated. The drum call of the tambores-an echo of Africa-and the vibrant costumes fill the senses with a rhythm and joy that demands to be photographed. After the parades, the party often continues with the crowds joining the costumed performers to dance in the streets long into the night.
The other event is the parade of Calls, that drum beat, moving in the sea lanes, which will evoke the encounter between the black slaves who gathered outside the city in the nineteenth century. Tens of thousands of spectators vibrate with the force and colorful show.
The colors, music and rhythm of the Montevideo's Carnival is an event you will never forget!
