Tour description
Just at ten-minute drive from downtown Buenos Aires there is a splendid protected area, the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, with a surface of 350 hectares of marshes, grasslands, bushes and woods, and housing a surprising diversity of wildlife. Over 220 species of birds have been recorded in the area, among which we can mention black-necked swans, silver teals, white-necked herons, rufescent tiger-herons, black-hooded parakeets, red-crested and yellow-billed cardinals, masked gnatcatchers, golden-breasted woodpeckers, and black-and-rufous warbling finches, just to mention a few of them. Mammals such as coipos and Pampas’ cavies, and reptiles such as tegu lizards and painted turtles complete the list of vertebrates and make the Costanera Sur Reserve a fascinating destination for any nature tour or photo safari just at few minutes away from your hotel.
But Buenos Aires also offers other nearby protected areas, such as Ribera Norte Nature Preserve and numerous urban parks. The elegant Palermo neighborhood hosts the largest and most beautiful urban parks in Buenos Aires, some of them very old, such as the Rosedal or “Park of the Roses” as well as some picturesque artificial lakes. What very few people know is that these places shelter a wide variety of native birds, including a colony of 3 species of herons: the great and snowy egrets and black-crowned night-heron.
Our photographic tours will also enable you to photograph white-tufted grebes, red-crested cardinals, golden-breasted woodpeckers, olivaceous cormorants, roadside hawks, various species of parrots and parakeets, “coipos” (an aquatic rodent) and even different species of turtles.
